Chi Capricornids

The Chi Capricornids Meteor Shower peaks at around 0500 UTC on the 14th Feb. The radiant is very close to the Sun. If you aren't using an omni FM aerial, point your beam at right angles to the position of the Sun in the sky.

Re: Peter has re-located to Botswana for three months

More accurate distance figures for my permanent FM reception on the 83cm whip.

Johannesburg 263km, Pretoria 270 km, Christiana 292km, Schweizer-Reneke 212 km.
There are many more.

Re: Peter has re-located to Botswana for three months

Johannesburg and Pretoria on FM at around 300km both seem to be permanent on the 83cm vertical whip using the HF+ Discovery.
Unfortunately a lot of noise from overground power cables on LW/MW/ SW on the whip, but not a problem for FM.

Re: Beverage Question

Thanks David and Noel.
Noel, I'm in a very rural area SE of Lobatse.
John, there is nowhere to run out a beverage outside the fence where it won't get trampled on by people or livestock or be a tripping hazard or eaten by goats.

Re: Beverage Question

Thanks John.
There aren't any gaps.
Directivity doesn't matter as MW is virtually empty here so nothing to exclude.
I'll try connecting my Tecsun PL-360 via its MW antenna socket, to the fence at various points.

Re: Beverage Question

I'll ask this here, as I have a similar fence available. The fence is consists of galvanised steel wire, part of the length is barbed wire. Most of the fence has galvanised steel chicken wire attached to the horizontal wires. The fence actually forms a three large rectangles overall (three building ...

Re: Peter has re-located to Botswana for three months

Looking forward to your logs. What time zone are you? CET? What sort of static level do you get there, and is 60m still used in the region? Hello Julian, Local Time = UTC +2 all year round (There is no Summer Time) There is quite a lot of static due to thunderstorms, it is the rainy season. I'll tr...

Some MW bandscans would be great to see Peter. Sounds like an amazing place to DX from.
Hello Paul
MW is almost completely empty here during the daytime, there are no strong locals.
I'm going to install some aerials within the next few days, including for MW.
I brought some SDRs with me.

It's maybe a little late for Austral Es season, but is it the right time for TEP?
There is usually little or none Es here.
A bit early for TEP.

Peter has re-located to Botswana for three months

Just got internet access today. There are actually several FM stations in my rural location at portable radio strength. Some of them have RDS. I have 360 deg take-off for a change :) FM aerials are not available locally, but I bought a ring dipole and two 83cm telescopic car radio aerials with me an...

Excellent news! I am looking forward to this as I will be at home to take advantage of it this week, but there is zero tropo to report at the moment.

Have we beaten the high pressure record yet?

Well, I've never been interested in any guys, but I have had to explain DX. FM DX, which is more or less understandle by most people, but previously my main unterest was Band I TVDX. Nobody awake yet? Tropo is coming in very slowly, nothing to get excited about yet though, just about back to my normal flatness, instead of being less than flat.
