Have a look at the Met Office Surface Pressure chart for Sunday at 00:00. The centre of the low pressure is marked as 922 mb! This is only just above the lowest ever pressure recorded in Europe - by Iceland - at 920 mb on 2 Dec 1929. Wikipedia has a lot of info on highest/lowest records around Europ...

Re: Tropo 06/02/20

Here in SE UK (JO1 01) the nearer German stations in the 400-450 km range are coming through eg Nordhelle, Aachen, Barbelkreuz, and of course Langenberg. At the moment they are not particularly strong, but maybe as dusk falls there will be a temperature inversion (probably not warm enough in the day...

Re: Tropo imminent - UK

Dutch, Belgian and French 'locals' are enhanced. Only a few of the closer German stations are there - Aachen (388 km), and Langenberg (457 km) noisy and without RDS . Nothingothing from Teutoberg-Wald (560 km) which is nother good indicator fr tropo from my location. There is nothing warranting a lo...

Re: Tropo imminent - UK

20:45 Nostalgie on 87.6 with pi code on horizontal aerial, and noisy BBC R2 from Holme Moss 89.3, and Klara on 90.4 with pi code on the vertical. Lille on 88.7, 94.7, and 105.2 the latter just giving full RDS

But that is 'normal' for my QTH.

20/01/2020 15:00 - on 103.3 DLF is coming through weakly (655 km) at the same time as WDR Cosmo - both fading in and out of the noise.

Re: Tropo imminent - UK

I would sit for hours looking at a snowy screen, and get excited when a test card appears. I remember those youthful days - the Russian testcard would pop up momentarily on R1 with random meteors first thing in the morning, and a weak signal from Lopik E4 was present nearly every day. My mum got an...

Tropo imminent - UK

A new source of tropo forecasts: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7901997/High-air-pressure-set-black-TV-shows-including-Greatest-Dancer.html Of note is the comments from the Met Office that a temperature inversion could cause signals to weaken. I've come across that before - locals weaken. ...

Recording more multiple I/Q streams - query

I hope the subject heading is clear enough. With the availabilty of 3 wideband SDRs I wanted to try recording more than one stream simultaneously to an external hard drive. I have also just purchased a 4TB USB 3.0 external hard drive to give more capacity (roughly 22 hrs for a 10 MHz wide bandwidth)...

Re: Quadrantids 2020

I managed to record from the evening of the 3rd to the evening of the 4th - with a couple of hours gap in the early hours of the 4th. Much of the time I beamed east. The hourly rate was well under 100/hr at the most intense time - but were quite productive for identifiable signals. Logs can be seen ...

Re: Fibre broadband speed differences

An update - my FTTC broadband connection has remained rock solid at 40 Mb down / 9.3 Mb up. My daughter's TalkTalk FTTC is only giving around 20 MB down/ *.8 Mb up - but the TalkTalk service status check is indicating a problem outside the house. They haven't been bothered to chase it up as it still...

Denmark in Kent - again (2)

I was out all day but before I left I had time for a quick check on the analogue tuners. Denmark on 97.2 was just below RDS level at 07:15 and was still there when I got back in at 17:15. At 20:15 DR P3 is peaking at full RDS on 91.7. Unfortunately being so close to Belgium/Netherlands there is a lo...

Re: Poland BOB -probable Es - SE UK

Live listening I got signals as high as 98.4 MHz - I'll check the recordings later - but only covered up to around 103 MHz.

A nice bit of excitement - maybe some more tomorrow. The OIRT band is beginning to fade and will probably drop out just before the top of the hour.

Just a tiny, beginner's OT: what does OM stand for exactly? It is one of many abbreviations used by amateur radio operators - dating back to the days of morse code (CW). --- -- being far quicker to send than the full code for 'old man' OM = "old man" i.e male person YL = "young lady i.e. female XYL...

Some of the closer German stations - Aachen and Langenberg - are at RDS (PI code only) level. Looks promising.
